Research proves that colonoscopies cut cancer deaths

Health-conscious individuals who take an herbal colon cleansing supplement are probably interested in doing everything they can to avoid developing a serious illness, such as colon cancer. One of the best ways to do this may be to get a colonoscopy, as research published in the New England Journal of Medicine has finally proven a long-debated statement: colonoscopies save lives.

The New York Times reported on the findings, which showed that patients who received a colonoscopy and had precancerous growths or polyps removed cut their chances of dying of colon cancer by 53 percent.

"For any cancer screening test, reduction of cancer-related mortality is the holy grail," said Gina Vaccaro, M.D., of the Knight Cancer Institute at Oregon Health and Science University who was not involved in the research, quoted by the Times. "This study does show that mortality is reduced if polyps are removed, and 53 percent is a very robust reduction."

The American Cancer Society states that colon cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in the U.S. However, this disease may be easier to treat when caught in the early stages. The findings of this recent study suggest that regular colonoscopies may be the key to discovering colon cancer before it gets the chance to spread.
