Supplements may help prevent colon cancer

Taking an herbal colon cleansing supplement could help boost a person's digestive health, which is an important step toward avoiding cancer. Recently, researchers evaluated the effect of vitamin and mineral supplements on the development of colon cancer, and determined that regular consumption of these pills could reduce a person's risk of the disease.

A study published in the Canadian Journal of Physiology and Pharmacology (CJPP) found that rats that were exposed to a number of carcinogens were less likely to develop colon cancer if they were also given vitamin supplements.

Furthermore, the animals were also fed a high-fat, low-fiber diet, which has been associated with a greater likelihood of developing this disease. The supplements were found to reduce the formation of pre-cancerous lesions by 84 percent. According to scientists, these findings are not only important for people who are trying to avoid colon cancer, but also those who already have it.

"This study is important because it gives some direction to cancer patients in desperate need of guidance on the value of multivitamins and minerals administered during cancer," said Grant Pierce, M.D., editor of CJPP.

The study authors concluded by saying that they have enough evidence to support the claim that regular use of multivitamin supplements may reduce the risk of colon cancer.
