Colon Cleansing

Could tea have the potential to kill cancer cells?

People who take an herbal colon cleansing supplement are already working toward boosting their digestive health, which is important considering that the American Cancer Society reports that colon cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in both men and women in the U.S. Recently, researchers have discovered that another possible way to combat the disease is to drink yerba mate tea, a South American  beverage.

Scientists from the University of Illinois have found that colon cancer cells appear to die after being exposed the bioactive compounds found in the tea.

"The caffeine derivatives in mate tea not only induced death in human colon cancer cells, they also reduced important markers of inflammation," said Elvira de Mejia, a U of I associate professor of food chemistry and food toxicology.

According to researchers, the DNA of tumor cells is damaged by the tea, which causes them to self-destruct. Furthermore, the results of the study suggest that the caffeine derivatives in mate tea hold the potential to not only fight cancer, but other inflammatory diseases as well.
