Have you been trying to lose weight for years, but it never seems to work out? According to a recent study conducted by researchers at the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center at the Boston Children's Hospital, a low-fat diet may not be as effective as one that limits the amount of carbohydrates you eat.

Scientists examined the effects of a low-fat diet where the majority of the calories can from carbs, and low-glycemic index or very-low carbohydrate diet, where most calories come from fat and protein. They discovered that the low-glycemic and low-carb diets may be better for people who want to achieve long-term weight loss. In the end, the researchers found that low-glycemic index is likely the best diet.

"We believe that low-glycemic-index diets are easier to stick to on a day-to-day basis, compared to low-carb and low-fat diets, which many people find limiting," said researcher Cara Ebbeling. Ph.D. "Unlike low-fat and low-very-carbohydrate diets, a low-glycemic-index diet doesn't eliminate entire classes of food, likely making it easier to follow and more sustainable."

In a low-glycemic index diet, you consume processed grains, vegetables, healthy fats, legumes and fruits, and get 40 percent of calories from carbs, 40 percent from fat and 20 percent from protein.
