Don't reach for that fat-free dressing

If you're trying to lose weight and plan on taking an herbal diet supplement and changing the way you eat, it's important for to remember that a diet is about cutting calories, not nutrients. For example, when you choose a salad dressing, you may be keeping your body from absorbing the vitamins and minerals from the veggies if you use a fat-free one.

Researchers from Purdue University asked people to eat salads with either saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat-based dressings. They discovered that all of these dressings, especially monounsaturated fat-based ones, help the body absorb the nutrients in vegetables, while fat-free varieties do not.

"Overall, pairing with fat matters. You can absorb significant amounts of carotenoids with saturated or polyunsaturated fats at low levels, but you would see more carotenoid absorption as you increase the amounts of those fats on a salad," said researcher Mario Ferruzzi.

These findings are an important reminder that a successful diet is one where you cut back on the fat you eat each day, but do not eliminate it completely. The body needs some fat to function properly, just don't over indulge.
