How much vitamin D is enough for elderly?

 

Individuals who want to stay healthy as they get older should consider taking an herbal anti-aging supplement, along with eating right and getting regular exercise. Older people should also be sure to maintain their vitamin D levels, as having adequate amounts of this nutrient is important to overall health.

In the past few years, there has been an ongoing debate over exactly what the ideal amount of vitamin D is for elderly people. Recently, researchers from the University of Washington decided to conduct a study to settle this question. The scientists found that people with vitamin D levels less than 20 nanograms per milliliter were more likely to experience heart attack, cancer and death.

"Our results lend support to the threshold level recently recommended by the Institute of Medicine, a national, independent government advisory group," said researcher Ian de Boer. M.D.

While vitamin D can be obtained through sun exposure, elderly individuals need to be careful that they do not damage their skin and increase their risk of cancer by staying out in the sun too long. Instead, they can consume fortified juice, milk, cereal and oily fish like salmon and cod to get this nutrient. They should also consider taking a vitamin D supplement along with their herbal anti-aging supplement.
