Insomnia may worsen effects of tinnitus

For people who are unable to sleep and looking to get much needed rest, it may be beneficial to consider an herbal insomnia supplement to help alleviate symptoms. Proper sleep is crucial in maintaining proper bodily functioning. In fact, a recent study from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit suggests that insomnia may worsen the effect on those with tinnitus, highlighting the importance that sleep plays in the treatment of the condition.

Though the exact physiological cause is unknown, tinnitus is characterized by chronic and recurrent ringing or buzzing in the ears. The condition currently affects over 36 million Americans. The result of the study shows a strong link between poor sleep habits and the severity of tinnitus symptoms, suggesting that insomnia could be exacerbating the problem.

"Tinnitus involves cognitive, emotional, and psycho-physiological processes, which can result in an increase in a patient's distress. Sleep complaints, including insomnia, in these patients may result in a decrease in their tolerance to tinnitus," says study co-author Kathleen Yaremchuk, M.D.

Though there is no treatment or cure for tinnitus, the Mayo Clinic suggests avoiding possible triggers like loud noises and stimulants. Ideally, sleep and relaxation exercises can contribute to better functioning and may lessen the symptoms of tinnitus. Though there is no definitive proof, various herbal supplements like zinc and ginkgo may also provide much needed relief from the persistent disorder.
