Sleep apnea may have negative effects for healthy erectile functioning

According to the Mayo Clinic, sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing patterns repeatedly stop and start abruptly. Occurring in two primary forms: obstructive and central sleep apnea, the disorder can make it difficult to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

This disorder can cause serious side effects, including poor cardiovascular health and irregular sleep habits. However, The New York Times has recently published evidence suggesting that sleep apnea may be a contributing factor to a lack of intimacy between partners, erectile dysfunction in men and the loss of libido in women.

Experts from the Journal of Sexual Medicine believe the sleep disorder may be linked to important sex hormones like testosterone, which naturally rise and fall with sleep patterns. If there is a substantial lack of quality rest due to apnea, hormone levels may continuously hover at a lower rate than usual, which could create erectile difficulties.

However, even though erectile dysfunction is common in older men, the disorder can still be treated in a variety of ways, including routine exercise, a healthy diet and regularly taking natural virility pills that may help spark one's libido and sexual desire.
