People who want to stay healthy as they get older know that there are many natural vitamins and minerals on the market now that are designed to help them do just that. For example, this population can take an herbal anti-aging supplement and pills that contain omega-3 fatty acids, as this nutrient has been shown to potentially boost brain health.
Recently, researchers from the Easton Center for Alzheimer's Disease Research and the Division of Geriatrics at the University of California in Los Angeles found that people who have a diet lacking in omega-3s may be at a higher risk of memory loss.
The scientists examined more than 1,500 people for their study. The participants had an average age of 67, and all of them were free of dementia at the start of the investigation. Researchers found that individuals whose omega-3 levels were in the bottom percentile had a lower brain volume and scored on tests of visual memory and executive function.
Omega-3s can be found in fish as well as in many natural supplements.
