Lack of sleep may have serious consequences

Individuals who have trouble sleeping should consider taking an herbal insomnia supplement, especially considering all of the conditions that sleep deprivation can contribute to. Recently, The University of Massachusetts, Lowell spoke to Phillips McEnany, co-author of a new book “Sleep Disorders and Sleep Promotion in Nursing Practice," about the connection between rest and disease.

"Inadequate sleep increases the risk for the onset of a number of serious illnesses. We know that there’s a direct link between not enough sleep and obesity. In turn, obesity can lead to diabetes and hypertension," said McEnany, quoted by UMass writer Karen Angelo.

The expert recommended that people who are having trouble sleeping minimize their caffeine intake. He also suggests designating the bedroom as a place for rest and sex, and nothing else. Reading, watching TV, using a computer or eating in bed may break the association between sleep and the bedroom.

The National Sleep Foundation suggests that adults get between seven and nine hours of sleep a night. The organization adds that it's important for people to examine their lifestyle to determine how much rest they really need.
