Researchers offer tips on keeping the aging brain healthy

Taking an herbal anti-aging supplement could be one way to preserve the mind as the years go by, but the brain faces many challenges as people get older. Recently, research presented at Neuroscience 2011, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience offered suggestions for how to potentially overcome these challenges, such as memory loss.
"Even as the body begins to slow down as we age, the brain, when challenged by physical and mental activities, continues to grow and change," said press conference moderator Barbara Sahakian, Ph.D., of the University of Cambridge.
Scientists found that physically fit older people have fewer signs of aging in their brains. This population also outperformed their more sedentary counterparts on memory tests. This means that staying active could help protect the brain from forgetting things as individuals age.
One surprising finding was that sleep does not seem to improve memory in older adults, while the opposite was discovered in younger people. Sahakian added that these results will hopefully encourage aging individuals to take a more active role in their brain health.
