Vaccine for prostate cancer may be on the way

There may be hope on the horizon for people with this disease, however, as researchers believe they may be close to developing a vaccine to fight the illness. Scientists from the Mayo Clinic have successfully reduced prostate tumors in mice using a vaccine that has no major side effects, unlike chemotherapy and other traditional cancer treatments.

In the past, researchers have been unable to create a successful vaccine against cancer because they have been unable to isolate the antigens of tumors. This problem leads to tumors simply re-locating to other parts of the body rather than being destroyed.
The Mayo Clinic scientists who worked on this project believe they have moved past the antigen problem and are hopeful that this will open the door to more cancer-fighting vaccines.
